Young people in Lichfield and Burntwood are being urged to get the MMR vaccination if they haven’t already had it.
A new programme has been launched by the Department of Health after outbreaks of measles in parts of Britain.
In order to prevent a further spread, the new scheme is aiming to vaccinate as many ten to 16-year-olds as possible.
Dr Alison Teale, from Staffordshire County Council’s public health team, said: “While measles cases have been on the increase in some parts of the UK, there is no evidence of an increase in measles cases in Staffordshire.
“Nonetheless, we want to take every precaution to make sure that local children and the wider community are as protected as they can be from the potentially serious effects of measles.
“A national catch-up programme is being introduced to vaccinate young people who have not had the full two doses of MMR. This catch-up programme will be organised locally and will run for several months.
“This is purely a preventative measure so there is no cause for parents to be alarmed.”
