MORE than £5,000 has been raised following the death of a Lichfield pub landlord.
Chris Whelan had run The George and Dragon since March 2024.
A fundraiser was launched to help support his family and cover funeral costs after his death aged just 39 – and the initial £3,000 target has now passed £5,000.
Tom Guest, who launched the online fundraising page, said:
“Chris was known and loved by a lot of people and built a pub up to be a much-loved family venue in the community. He’ll be missed by so many.
“He passed away far too soon at the age of 39, leaving a profound legacy of love, laughter and togetherness.
“A beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and dear friend, Chris was the heart and soul of The George and Dragon pub, where his natural warmth and effortless wit brought an entire community together.
“He approached life with a legendary sense of humour and a genuinely kind spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
“More than anything, he was a dedicated family man, leaving behind his wife of less than two years and their beautiful four-year-old daughter.
“Chris’ vibrant presence and generous heart will be missed immensely, but his spirit will live on in the community he built and the family he loved so dearly.”
