A local MP has welcomed the news that the Olympic Torch will pass through Lichfield and Tamworth as part of the build-up to the 2012 Games.

It has been confirmed that the flame will pass through Lichfield and Hopwas en route to Tamworth on June 30, before heading out to Great yrley.

Christopher Pincher, MP for Hopwas and Tamworth, has welcomed the news.

“Having written to Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson and Games organiser Sebastian Coe, I am very pleased that the Olympic Committee agree with me and have decided to put Lichfield district, and especially Hopwas, on the map for the torch relay,” he said. “It is also excellent news and thoroughly deserved.

“We should also be very grateful for all the work done by District and County Councillors to make the case for our area.

“I will continue to work with the Olympic team to try to win rewards for Lichfield District. I would also like to encourage everybody in the area around Hints and Hopwas to take advantage of this opportunity on our doorsteps. I look forward to seeing local residents as official Torch Bearers.”
