The discovery of an old rowing boat on the now uncovered bed at Chasewater has opened up a mystery.
The ‘shipwreck’ was discovered while the reservoir was being drained ready for repair work to begin on the dam.
And following an appeal on a blog set up to record what has been happening with the repairs, a number of suggestions have been made about how the boat got there.
A spokesperson for Lichfield District Council wrote on the blog:
“We’re not sure how it sank, or ended up at the bottom of Chasewater Reservoir, which is why we’re asking visitors to the park if they remember seeing any boats of this sort on the reservoir.”
Some suggestions have included that it was a former sea cadet vessel, while others have suggested it was once owned by a family who had shooting rights on the water.
