A plan to name new streets in Burntwood after local World War Two heroes has been hailed as “excellent” news.
The 20 streets will take inspiration from those named on a nearby memorial.
Among the proposed new names for the Milestone Way development are:
- Ruston Road
- Collis Close
- Oakley Road
- Fitch Croft
- Brawn Croft
- West Croft
- Plumb Close
- Faunch Close
- Wright Close
- Howdle Croft
- Follows End
- Glover Close
- Gough Lane
- Smith Way
- Vayro Close
- Bird Grove
- James Close
- Pooler Close
- Murcott End
- Brazier Close
The proposal came from Burntwood Town Council after Cllr Darren Ennis was approached by a local resident.
“I think it is excellent for the area and in my quest to find more history of these soldiers, by contacting relatives and with some help from the Burntwood Family History Group, I managed to do this,” he said. “Some have sent me lots of information and pictures.”
Now Lichfield District Council is asking for permission from any other surviving relatives to use these names.
Councillor Chris Spruce said: “We heartily agreed with Burntwood Town Council’s suggestion to name these roads in honour of the 22 local men who lost their lives fighting for their country in the Second World War.
“As part of the street naming process we do need to give any relatives the opportunity to tell us if they would rather the names are not used. So, if you are a descendant of any of the men who are commemorated on Chasetown’s war memorial, please get in touch to tell us if you give your consent.”
