Owners of empty homes in Lichfield and Burntwood look set to continue paying an extra 50% on top of their council tax bill.
Lichfield District Council’s Cabinet will discuss a proposal to extend the premium – which was first approved at the start of 2013 – in a meeting on Tuesday (October 7).
The council tax charge applies to any properties which have been empty for two or more years.
A report to the meeting adds: “Lichfield District Council has had considerable success in reducing the number of long term empty
properties in the District and levying the 150 per cent premium is a contributory factor.
“In April 2013, there were 213 that met the criteria – this has reduced to 125 in September 2014.”
The report continues: “The Government consulted on circumstances where the premium might not apply, including a dwelling that was genuinely on the market for sale or letting.
“The conclusion on this point was that the premium could be applied in these circumstances.”
