People power has been credited with saving Burntwood’s tip from closure.
Staffordshire County Council had been planning to launch a public consultation over the future of the site.
But now Burntwood county councillor Sue Woodward says the report has been withdrawn.
It means it is the third time closure of the household waste recycling centre the site has been fought off.
“This is good news for Burntwood and beyond and a sign that community action in Burntwood is alive and well,” said Cllr Woodward.
“It is the third time plans to close the site have been put forward and the third time that we have won the arguments, so it’s a big thank you to all of those Burntwood people who signed the petition and to those who collected the signatures.
“People power has won again.”
Critics had said the proposals did not take into account the traffic flows to the Poplars waste site, the number of users or the impact on Lichfield District Council’s waste management budget.
Cllr Woodward added: “If you’re sitting at a desk in Stafford, the case for closing the Burntwood site might have looked tempting.
“But it didn’t take account of the amount of traffic that would back up at the Poplars roundabout, the numbers of people who regularly dispose of waste there responsibly and appropriately or any proposed new housing in Burntwood.
“The reality on the ground just didn’t reflect what the report said.
“I hope that Staffordshire County Council will recycle the paper that this report was written on and not try to reuse it ever again.”
