Staffordshire Police and Crime Commissioner has warned drivers without tax in Lichfield and Burntwood that they will be targeted.
Matthew Ellis made the pledge after making funding available for officers to establish a new unit to clamp down on drivers who are “dodging their responsibilities”.
“Why should the rest of us pay higher insurance premiums and have the annoyance of seeing untaxed vehicles being driven on our roads when law abiding people pay up more and more year after year?” he said.
“Tax dodging is bad enough but those who don’t insure their vehicles and then drive them on our roads are not only costing the rest of us money but are massively irresponsible and, in short, law breakers. It’s time they were caught and dealt with.”
The scheme will use the county’s automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system to help identify and track down offenders.
“Anyone driving without insurance on our roads could face having their car seized on-the-spot and could have a long trek home,” Mr Ellis added. “But even if there isn’t on the spot action by police the use of the camera network means they can expect action soon after being spotted.”
