Eight-month-old German Shepherd puppy Isla has been donated to Staffordshire Police and is currently being assessed to see whether she will be suitable for active duty alongside the county’s Dog Support Unit.

A spokesperson said: “She’s settled into her temporary home with Sgt Rich Cope really well.

“As well as spending plenty of time playing with her, he’s already begun familiarising her with the routine of a police dog and getting her used to the environment she will be working in when she’s older.

“Although too young to begin any serious police dog training, Isla is already showing potential as she has a very high play drive and has quickly grasped some of the essential obedience commands.

“As Isla develops and matures she will be assessed and if suitable will begin her police dog training course at around 12-months and be matched to a suitable handler.”
