A meeting to discuss how best to help refugees across Europe is being held at Lichfield Cathedral.
It will be attended by church and civic leaders from across the region.
The Very Revd Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield, said the session – at 7.30pm on Wednesday (September 16) – was aiming to “harness” the good will of local people and organisations.
“The whole of Europe has been shaken by the size and scale of the Syrian refugee crisis and the plight of people from Afghanistan and Iraq who have been forced out of their jobs and homes by war and terrorism,” he said.
“Here in England, many cathedrals and churches are holding meetings such as ours to bring together all who are concerned about the situation.
“We want to harness the good will, compassion and generosity of local communities, the churches and local authorities to see how we can help at this acutely difficult time, and see how we can nudge government into acting with imagination and mercy. All are welcome to this meeting.”
The Cathedral will also be holding a special prayer vigil for the refugee crisis, on Sunday (September 13) at 5pm, during which Becky Hurst, Christian Aid’s regional coordinator, will speak about the work of Christian Aid in affected areas.
