The talented singer Louis Connor and the Tom Morgan quartet played to an attentive and capacity crowd at The Hub at St Mary’s.
They played jazz standards, blues, soul and gospel, along with versions of songs by Paul McCartney and Sam Cooke that took musical liberties with the tunes to good effect.
They started with two instrumentals, Charlie Chaplin’s Smile was delivered as a tone poem for guitar and sensitive support, while Stomping at the Savoy was delivered at a fast pace, with plenty of lively soloing.
The songs covered included such jazz standards as Let There be Love, Sunny Side of the Street and Blue Moon, which featured a guitar introduction that was full of melody and intricate accompaniment.
An Orange Coloured Sky was an upbeat reading, with some fine piano, while the fast samba of Fly Me To The Moon gave this well known standard a new twist.
A lively, but musically faithful Blackbird gave Paul McCartney’s tune a new lease of life, and Sam Cooke’s You Send Me showed of Louis Connor’s voice to great effect.
