LICHFIELD District Council is in the running for a national award.

The local authority is a finalist in the Public Sector Leadership category at the 2026 Social Value Awards, which celebrate organisations making a positive difference through the services they deliver.

Through its Our Community Can initiative, the council ensures that businesses winning contracts provide additional funding, equipment, skills and practical support to local groups, schools and charities.

The initiative has already helped deliver more than £4million in social value with projects including the creation of a new teen hangout at Burntwood Park, £9,000 of gym equipment for a local school and new bowls equipment for a community centre.

Cllr Rob Strachan, cabinet member for finance and commissioning at Lichfield District Council, said:

"We want Lichfield district to be a place where communities thrive, and we recognise that the council has an important role to play in making that happen.

"That's why we've been ambitious in our approach to social value. It's not just about getting the best deal for the council but making sure the decisions we take and the contracts we award create lasting opportunities for the people and places we serve.

"To have that approach recognised nationally is something we're incredibly proud of. It reflects the hard work of our teams and the fantastic partnerships we've built with businesses and community organisations across the district.

"There's already so much to celebrate, but we're determined to do even more."

Lichfield District Council is one of seven finalists for the Public Sector Leadership Award, with winners announced at the Social Value Conference in December.
