A group based near Lichfield that offers social and practical support for stroke victims is celebrating a double success.
The Step Forward organisation – which meets every two weeks at Whittington Village Hall – has won a national award as well as securing funding to purchase new equipment.
The group started out as an eight week project supported by the National Stroke Association, but there was so much enthusiasm the new permanent group was established and now has more than 40 members.
John and Wendy Gilbert have been organising the group’s activities since the end of the initial project and they are delighted that things are going from strength to strength.
John, who suffered a stroke in 2010, explained:
“After a stroke lives do change and that not only affects the person themself but also family and friends. Step Forward is about helping people to get back on track. Getting out of the house, regaining confidence and generally being amongst others in similar situations, socialising and enjoying the friendship is what it’s all about.”
The award from the Stroke Association was presented in London and recognised the quality of Step Forward’s support to people, as well as their achievements in such a short time.
The £400 grant came from Matthew Ellis, Lichfield Rural East’s County Councillor, through his Local Community Fund and is to purchase a digital projector so the group can play Wii on a giant screen.
Wendy said:
“Everyone looks forward to the next get together as they leave each gathering we have. To see the improvement and growing confidence that some of our members are experiencing is wonderful. We’re really proud to have won the award but the biggest satisfaction is how people are blossoming because of the group.
“Playing our Wii isn’t just about having fun. It stimulates the mind and helps coordination. Matthew’s funding for a projector means a much big picture that everyone can see and more people can take part. He’s visited our group over recent months and always says what a wonderful atmosphere it has.”
Cllr Ellis admitted he was delighted to support the group. He said:
“This is a truly inspirational group of people. Stroke can be devastating but the atmosphere whenever I visit Step Forward is inspirational, happy and exciting all rolled into one.
“Groups like this are so important to local communities and help so many people to maintain a more active and fulfilling life. I’m so proud of what is going on at Whittington and am delighted to help financially or in any other way I can.”
