Work has begun to on a new housing development on the site of a former sheltered housing scheme in Lichfield city centre.
The site on Lower Sandford Street has stood empty since Bromford residents were moved from Sandford Gate to new apartments in 2013 as part of the Friary Outer project.
But after the building was demolished, work has started on the new £6million Lichfield One development which will create 33 apartments.
Penny Downing, Bromford’s sales and marketing director, said: “This area of Lichfield has been completely transformed thanks to the £14m Friary Outer project and with its close proximity to Beacon Park and Lichfield Cathedral, we expect Lichfield One to be extremely popular with a range of buyers including those looking for a first step on the property ladder and those downsizing and looking for that city centre lifestyle.”
Councillors, representatives from Lichfield District Council and Bromford directors attended a special sod-cutting ceremony to mark the start of the project.
The site foundations are now being installed before the central steel structure begins to rise from the ground in March or April.
Chairman of Lichfield District Council, Councillor David Salter, added: “It is great to see the project really get underway as not only will it offer more city centre living, it will also improve the look and feel of the area once it has been redeveloped.”
