A presentation has been made to Lichfield City Council’s long-serving town clerk.
Peter Young received a watch, engraved tankard and a book of Phillip Larkin’s poems to mark his 25 years of service.
“It was a great surprise for me,” said Peter. “I was led to believe I was attending the Guildhall for another event and then found all the councillors had turned out to make the presentation to me.
“I was both delighted and honoured.”
Peter began as town clerk in 1987, having previously been clerk at Dronfield in Derbyshire, and Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire. He is only the 26th clerk of the City since 1583, but still has some way to go to beat the record of Charles Simpson who held the position for 53 years in the 19th Century.
Mayor Brian Bacon said: “Peter has provided excellent service to this council and this was an important milestone that we felt should be celebrated.”
