Lichfield RUFC returned to league action after an enforced four week lay-off due to the weather conditions. After having such a long break there was a worry that Lichfield’s 2009 form would be difficult to match, certainly from the word go, this was not the case as Lichfield came out of the blocks fired up and keen to continue where they left off. The scoring was opened in the 11th minute, a period of pressure in the Stourbridge 22 saw the line broken when a lovely Dave Bassett pass put centre Tom Adams in under the posts, this was converted by Greg Massey. Lichfield continued to play all the rugby with forwards and backs combining well to produce some excellent attacking play. Lichfield crossed the line again in the 25th minute with a fine chip and chase from Greg Massey saw him score and convert his own try. This was followed up with a try for Greg’s brother Luke just before half time meaning Lichfield entered the break 25-0. The half time talk was all about maintaining the good work in the 1st half and pushing on for an 80 minute performance and this was exactly what happened. Lichfield dominated the second half with some excellent defence not allowing the travelling Stourbridge team to play. The Lichfield pack carried the ball well with some lovely off-loads creating holes time after time. John Hicks, Rich Burton and Joe Thompson in particular making some strong runs, they were ably supported by Nick Smith who was always on hand and Derrick Squire who worked tirelessly around the pack. The holes which the forwards were making allowed the Lichfield backs some quality quick possession, giving Adams, wingers Brown and Brear and Full-back Rose plenty of ball in hand. Lichfield extended the scoring with Luke crossing again on 49 minutes, converted by Greg, this was followed up by two excellent tries for Greg both of which he converted. Tom Adams bagged his second on 78 minutes, again converted by Greg and then Lichfield brought the half-century up with the final play of the game when Greg Massey capped a fine game to go in from 40 minutes, this was converted from the touchline by skipper Bassett. Lichfield: Taylor, Gabbitass, Bassett (c), Hicks, Squire, Burton, Smith, Thompson; Clark, L Massey, Brown, Adams, G Massey, Brear, Rose. Subs: Sowden, Upton and W Cotterhill.
