As Lichfield and Burntwood voters prepare to go to the ballot box for the local elections on May 5, The Lichfield Blog has offered each of the candidates the chance to have their say.
We’ve sent out questionnaires to all District Council candidates and will publish their responses on the site to help you decide where to put your cross on election day. If your local candidates haven’t responded yet, why not chase them?
Name: Michael Wilcox
Ward: Alrewas and Fradley
Occupation: Bank manager
What has made you decide to stand for election?
I have for the last four years represented the villages and also been the Parish Councillor for Fradley, and I am presently Leader of the District Council and Cabinet Member for Finance, Revenues and Benefits.
In these difficult financial times, I think it is crucial we Budget well and prioritise those services which are of most importance to our electorate.
What are the key issues for you in your ward?
Ensuring that any proposed developments meet the needs of the community and that adequate provision is made for both recreational and local amenities and that the infastructure reflects those changes.
To protect the rural environment and to continue to oppose the development of the High Speed Rail Development through our District.
If you are elected how do you plan to keep your constituents informed of what you are doing to represent them?
I will continue to attend the Parish Council for both wards, keeping them updated on issues concerning the Villages and as before my blog will be a useful medium to communicate.
How do you feel you will be able to make a difference to your constituents?
As the controlling Conservative Council for the past four years, we will continue to work hard attracting investment to the District as well as creating new employment opportunities to both rural areas and beyond and creating affordable housing to encourage young families to remain within our District.
Anything else you would like to add?
I have thoroughly enjoyed the past four years representing Alrewas and Fradley and can give you my assurance that if elected will continue to put forward and where appropriate debate within Council the views of the villages.
We have been tasked with an enormous challenge following the General Election and from the Government Expenditure Review, which has seen us already make significant savings and will have to continue to do this for the foreseeable future.
Your Conservative District Council has performed well, and with your support will continue to make this District a safe and prosperous place to live.
