An early goal in each half gave Chasetown a 2-0 win over a Stoke City XI in their first home friendly of the pre-season.

Stoke’s mix of trialists and reserve players did not meld together well and a near full-strength Scholars side took advantage in a powerful performance.

Chasetown took the lead with the very first attack of the game, with a move down the right seeing Ramone Stephens the provider and his cross allowed Alex Steadman enjoy two chances to find the net and on the second he was successful for his first goal for the Scholars.

Ryan Price reacted well to an attack by Karim Rossi in the ninth minute while a free kick was headed over the bar Ryan O’Reilly. Chasetown’s own free kick on 18 minutes saw Mark Branch’s curling effort fly wide of the far post.

Steadman then went close again but Potters keeper Dale Eve was equal to his low shot, as was Price to tip Stoke’s next effort over the bar.

On 32 minutes Jake Sedgemore’s free kick was headed into the net by a visiting defender but the own goal was disallowed for offside.

The Potters’ next attack saw a shot from Rossi fly wide as Chasetown continued to put up a strong performance, newcomers Sedgemore and Steadman looking impressive throughout.

Seven minutes into the second half and an attack through the centre allowed Dean Perrow to make up for a quiet first half as he fired home Chasetown’s second.

The Scholars continued to press hard in an attacking display, second half substitute Andy Westwood’s shot flying wide on 79 minutes and Perrow and Danny Smith going close, while another Branch free kick was controlled by Jimmy Turner but sent over the bar by Adebayo Ajidahun. Turner was also unlucky with four minutes to go, heading another free kick onto the crossbar.

Chasetown next host an Aston Villa XI on Tuesday (7.30pm) before taking on Tamworth on Thursday (7.45pm). Admission is £6 for adults and £3 for concessions for both games.
