More than 1,200 people have backed a bid to earn Lichfield Ladies a spot in the new Women’s Super Rugby league. The club was controversially left off the list of teams set to compete in the competition, despite sitting second in the current Premiership table. It was a decision which Lichfield RUFC said left it “suprised and extremely disappointed”. But now an online petition has been launched in a bid to get the RFC to rethink their decision. “Lichfield Ladies is one of the most successful ladies rugby teams ever, supplying England, Scotland and Wales internationals for many years, as well as Olympians and World Cup winners,” the petition said. “They have been excluded by the RFU in taking part in the new competition despite demonstrating the ability to meet the standards laid out and provide the financial commitment required.” Lichfield’s MP has also questioned the decision:
