ALREWAS Cricket Club suffered an agonising two-run home defeat against Chesterfield on the opening day of the season.
The Herons opted to field first after winning the toss, making an early breakthrough when Hasnain Akhtar was caught by James Burton off the bowling of Arthur Walker after scoring just six runs.
But Chesterfield’s batsmen were in solid form as Ben Slater made 65, Kemira Wijenayake hit 39 and Ben Martindale struck 64 as they ended the innings on 229.
Walker was the pick of the Alrewas bowlers after taking 5-44.
Their response with the bat got off to the worst possible start when James Burton fell for a duck in the first over.
But his fellow opener Gareth Wooley struck a fine 109 before being dismissed with the score on 223 with an over to go.
The scoreboard ticked over to 227 with two balls left, but the dismissals of Sam van Daesdonk and William Hodgkinson meant there was to be no dramatic victory for the Herons.
