New Burntwood Town FC manager Mike Gentles gave his side a pre-season baptism of fire against Pelsall Villa.

In scorching temperatures and against Premier Division opposition, Burntwood battled bravely before going down 2-0 after goals from Daniel Battison and Kieran Millet.

But despite the result Gentles believes the tough encounter will stand his squad in good stead.

“It was a very tough test playing host to a side from two leages above,” he said. “But we managed to play some decent football in spells and create a couple of decent chances.

“The game was a good run out for our squad who needed minutes on the pitch to up our levels of fitness.”

Burntwood gave a number of players their first outing, but Gentles admits he’s still looking to add to his ranks before the big kick-off.

“The new lads fitted in to the side well and we will still be looking to add new faces to the squad,” he said.

Town return to frienldy action on Thursday (July 18) when they entertain Victoria Athletic.
