Poor playing conditions didn’t prevent Burntwood A XV from registering their fifth win in a row as they saw off Handsworth 2nds.
The visitors whitewashed the home side 35-0 courtesy of five converted tries.
Burntwood got off to a great start with two converted tries in the opening ten minutes. Both were breakaway scores from 30 metres out, the first from Chris Smith and the second from Ben Tranter, with Charlie Liggins adding the conversions.
However, Dave Ward’s side failed to capitalise on their fine start as players opted to go it alone for the rest of the half which led to errors in both attack and defence. Fortunately, Burntwood resisted the home attacks to keep the score at 14-0.
Stern words from coach Jimmy Davies during the break seemed to get his side back on track and they worked well together to regain control.
From a steady build up, Sam Corbett crossed for Burntwood’s third try. Then from the restart the forwards picked and drove their way back into Handsworth territory. A well-worked move in the backs saw Liggins touch down.
The last try came from replacement Callum Grundy who weaved his way through the home defence for an excellent individual try. Liggins added his fifth conversion to round off the scoring.
Tranter was the man of the match for Burntwood closely followed by Brad Holmes and scrum half Jack Butcher.
