The party have been encouraged by the support from local residents for parliamentary candidate John Rackham.

The group have held a regular stall in Lichfield city centre during the election campaign and say there is evidence of an appetite for their policies.

A spokesperson for the party said: “I’d like to say a big thank-you to all who have visited the UKIP stall and given their support – it has been very much appreciated.

“Once the general election is over we will be holding a meeting to discuss the way forward.”

Local activists believe Mr Rackham will prove a popular choice at the polls.

“John Rackham is a Lichfield voice, a voice of common sense and the voice of the voters for political change.

“He is a future politician who will serve you the public rather than the public serving him.”

The candidates standing in the Lichfield constituency in May are:

  • Andy Bennetts – Class War
  • Michael Fabricant – Conservatives
  • Robert Pass – Green Party
  • John Rackham – UKIP
  • Paul Ray – Lib Dem
  • Chris Worsey – Labour
