Lichfield Cathedral is hosting a new exhibition of artwork influenced by the historic Herkenrode Glass.
The glass is considered to be one of Europe’s greatest artistic treasures, and was installed in the city in 1803 after it was rescued from destruction during the Napoleonic Wars.
It has recently been restored after a mammoth fundraising drive – and to celebrate the work, local schoolchildren have been creating celebratory artwork.
Celia Houghton, Lichfield District Council’s Arts Development Officer, worked with 210 pupils from Hayes Meadow Primary, St Michael’s Primary, Thomas Barnes Primary, St Chad’s Primary and Chadsmead Primary Academy.
“We wanted to create artworks that represented the windows, as well as try new materials that aren’t often used in schools,” Celia said. “A lot of hard work has gone into this exhibition, and it’s absolutely fantastic to see it on display in the magnificent Lichfield Cathedral.”
The exhibition will be on display in the cathedral until June 25.
