THE company behind the clean-up of a huge fly-tipping incident in Lichfield say it was the largest such incident it has dealt with in 30 years.
Investigations are continuing after Watery Lane was blocked by a 15-metre long mound of waste on Monday morning (20th January).
The incident saw businesses unable to open and residents blocked from accessing their properties.
Specialist waste and recycling firm Wilshee’s Waste and Recycling were called in to clear the road after contacting Lichfield District Council to offer their help – with the rubbish cleared across a number of hours on Tuesday morning.
Dean Willshee, managing director of the company, said:
“Willshee’s has been working with the local council for 30 years and we are proud to support the community in our largest fly-tipping clean up to date.
“Fly-tipping is not only an eyesore, it is a health hazard that causes considerable disruption to businesses and local residents.
“We’re pleased to have been able to quickly remove the waste and ensure that the community was up and running again very quickly.”
The waste was removed from the site and taken to the company’s recycling facility in Burton where it was sorted into recyclable materials.
Lichfield District Council has appealed for people who were around Wood End Lane and Watery Lane between 11pm on 19th January and 12.45am the following morning to come forward as they seek to identify a tipper truck spotted in the area at the time.
A spokesperson said:
“Our officers have been searching the waste and going door-to-door to obtain CCTV footage and now have a number of leads to go on.
“We’ve now got covert cameras out in vulnerable areas and have a strong reputation for catching fly-tippers, seizing their vehicles and prosecuting them, but we need your help.
“Did you drive down Wood End Lane at around 11pm on 19th January or 12.45am on 20th January? Our environmental health officers are appealing to drivers to check their dashcam footage.
“At both those times officers want to identify a HGV tipper truck that reversed off Wood End Lane and down Watery Lane before dumping the waste and then driving back onto Wood End Lane.”
