A COUNCILLOR says Lichfield is not a place where messages of intolerance will be accepted.
Cllr Russ Bragger’s comments come after the Restore Britain group hosted a meeting in Lichfield.
Protesters gathered outside Darwin Hall during the event on Friday (8th May).
Cllr Bragger, the incoming leader of the Labour opposition group at Lichfield District Council, said he hoped residents would reject politics of division.
He said:
“We believe in British values of inclusion, respect for others and compassion – so we’re really concerned that this group were in Lichfield as their message is to spread hate and division in our communities.
“We oppose their discriminatory message which is intended to intimidate sections of our community.”
Cllr Bragger said that tolerance was an important element for local residents.
He explained:
“Lichfield is better than this – we’re a city of sanctuary and I’ve never known Lichfield to be a place where messages of intolerance are common currency.
“We hope the people of this proud city will ignore this group.”
