Councillors get it right on pay rise refusal

Published:

Well done to Lichfield’s councillors for making the right choice when it came to their proposed pay rise.

It’s not often that you see common sense and councillors in the same sentence without the word not, but this is one time when they simply had to make the right decision.

Councillor Doug Constable told the Mercury:

“It’s not about the money, it’s about making it clear that Lichfield district councillors understand the hardship that many people are suffering in these terrible financial times.”

And quite right to. While many will find cause to moan at the 2.7 per cent rise, I have no objection to that. But what I would have objected to would have been funding an increased allowance for councillors.

So well done on this one – let’s have more of the same ‘common sense decision-making’ in future please.
