A CAMPAIGN targeting drink and drug drivers across Staffordshire has seen more than 228 arrests.
Staffordshire Police carried out tests on more than 2,100 motorists between 24th November and 5th January.
Of those, 130 were found to be under the influence of alcohol while a further 84 had drugs in their system. There were also 69 traffic offences reported during the period including speeding and vehicle maintenance issues.
Chief Inspector Scott McGrath, head of Staffordshire Police’s road crime team, said:
“While it’s very difficult to accurately measure, we’re confident that our robust enforcement efforts over the last month have made our roads safer and, hopefully, prevented more serious or fatal collisions from happening in the first place.
“We target drink and drug drivers 365 days a year, but in November and December we’ve stepped up our efforts as part of our ongoing work against those putting themselves and others at risk on our roads.
“The inclement weather, darker nights and increased traffic flow show a consistent pattern of increased serious and fatal collisions, often linked to drink and drug driving.
“This type of crime has the capacity to devastate families, friends and loved ones forever, in the blink of an eye. We’ve seen first-hand the damage it can cause, and we are determined to act early and hopefully stop these tragedies from happening in the first place.”
