Ambulance crews say a cyclist left in a critical condition after a crash near Lichfield was injured in a “freak accident”.

The man from Rugeley was travelling in a large peloton of around 50 riders on the A513 between Alrewas and Kings Bromley at 6.20pm yesterday (June 20) when he collided with another cyclist.

He was airlifted to hospital after the incident, with a spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service confirming the man had landed on his head after going over his handlebars while travelling at around 25mph.

“The man was unconscious with a serious injury when crews arrived,” the spokesperson added. “The doctor on board the air ambulance decided to anaesthetise the patient at the scene before he was flown to the major trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

“Thankfully the man was wearing a helmet. While wearing one is a personal choice, the medical staff at the scene are in no doubt that his injuries could have been significantly worse had he not be wearing one.”
