The closure of a main road into Lichfield will leave drivers facing almost three months of delays.
Severn Trent Water has confirmed that the A5127 Burton Road through Streethay will shut for 12 weeks from July 19.
The first six weeks will be to allow sewer improvements to take place with the following six weeks seeing road improvements introduced ahead of the construction of the new housing development in the area.
Ash Tree Lane will also be closed between August 8 and 31 meaning residents will be unable to park on the road.
Diversions will be in place along the A38.
A spokesperson for Severn Trent said access to Lichfield Trent Valley Station would be maintained throughout the work.
The sewers in and around East Lichfield are in a good condition,” said John Amos, the water company’s programme manager. “However, like many other cities Lichfield is expanding rapidly.
“To accomodate the residential growth in the area and to prevent the sewers being overwhelmed when the new homes are built, we are investing over £1million to install a brand new sewage pumping station near Streethay House Farm and to install new sewers in and around the area.
“The flood risk in Streethay will also be reduced folloing the completion of the sewerage upgrade work.”
Bus passengers are being advised to check with operators how the closure will affect services.
