FIRE chiefs are reminding people to stay safe as temperatures continue to drop across Staffordshire.
They are also urging vulnerable and elderly residents to take additional care as winter weather grips the county.
Ian Read, from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said:
“With household costs rising, you might be looking at cheaper ways to heat your home, but it is crucial that cuts are not made when it comes to fire safety.
“In particular, I would like to appeal to elderly and vulnerable residents as well as those with mobility issues or a cognitive impairment to take care around open flames, even more so if they use emollient creams, which become flammable when they are dried.
“We have seen numerous tragic incidents over the years when this combination has led to disastrous outcomes.
“The safest approach for the elderly and vulnerable is to avoid using open fires or naked flames for heat and use safer alternative heat sources, such as central heating or oil filled radiators.”
He added that simple steps could make a huge difference when it comes to fire safety in the home.
“I would encourage all residents that have to use an open fire to get chimneys swept regularly and always store fuel, such as logs, away from the fire.
“Electric heaters should always be plugged into the wall to avoid overloading extension leads – and heaters should be kept away from other items and materials, such as curtains.
“I would urge all elderly and vulnerable people to register for a Safe and Well visit, which will help to ensure you are safe at home if you follow the advice.”
