Former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has given her backing to Labour’s general election candidate for Lichfield and Burntwood.
She was visiting the area to give a talk to local politicans when she gave her endorsement to Chris Worsey, who will attempt to take the seat from long-standing Conservative MP Michael Fabricant.
“One of the reasons I was delighted to attend is because people like Chris are the future of our party,” she said. “Chris is a young, dynamic campaigner who really understand the aspirations of local people.”She also spoke about her views on a range of issues in the talk at Chasetown FC’s Scholars Ground, raising money for the local Labour campaign pot.Hundreds of pounds were raised at the event which will go into the Labour campaign fund for the parliamentary and district elections.Mr Worsey said: “It was a real honour to have Jacqui here. She is a true trailblazer – the first woman Home Secretary and only the third woman to hold one of the great offices of State.“She has made a massive positive difference to this country for many years and continues to do so as Chair of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
“The turnout was fantastic and it shows that the local party is really focused on running a great campaign against the other parties.”
