LICHFIELD picked up just their second league win of the season as they beat Wombourne by two wickets.
Adam Braddock’s side lost the toss and were sent into the field first in sweltering conditions.
Hosts Wombourne struggled to get their innings going as Lichfield’s bowlers produced a regular supply of wickets.
Openers Chad Brandrick and Jack Hussey were back in the pavilion with the score on just six – and then Zachary Thomas joined them as the hosts made it to double figures.
Ben Hudson’s 23 not out proved to be the top score for Wombourne as he offered some resistance while those around him continued to fall.
Isaac Rowley starred with the ball as his 6-35 helped ensure the hosts could only reach 85 before being skittled out.
Despite the low total, Lichfield’s form this season in the South Staffordshire County League meant nothing could be taken for granted. But they made a positive start as opener Will Davies hit 35 to steer his side to 66 before he became the third wicket to fall when he was caught by Charlie Walker off the bowling of Ben Hudson.
The nerves began to jangle though as skipper Braddock went for a duck, Harry Turley-Salmons was dismissed after scoring 12 and then Preston Lee went without troubling the scoreboard to leave the city side teetering on 70-6.
The loss of Nick Richards with the score on 74 upped the tension, before Isaac Rowley became the eighth wicket to go with Lichfield still in need of a couple of runs.
But Robbie Stone and Zayn Hussain eventually saw them across the finish line to record their second South Staffordshire County League Premier Division win of the season and close the gap to the teams above them in the table.
