Labour’s candidate has praised residents in Lichfield for being “passionate” about their area.
Chris Worsey made his comments after the hustings event at Lichfield Cathedral on Sunday.
He said: “Over 300 people attended and I think that proves what a passionate, engaged community we have here in Lichfield.”
Each of the candidates were invited to speak on a range of issues – and Mr Worsey believes he will have given voters plenty to think about as he looks to overturn Michael Fabricant’s 17,000-plus majority.
“I think the hustings brought into focus the real choice that voters in Lichfield face,” Mr Worsey said. “I committed myself to working non-stop to make sure we don’t need a food bank in Lichfield, while the Conservative candidate was heckled by his own constituents for his car crash answer.”
Visitors to the cathedral heard Mr Worsey say his focus would be on creating high wage, high skill jobs in the area and cutting the number of families in fuel poverty.
“Labour has a vision for a kinder, fairer, more entrepreneurial country with world class public services, while the Conservatives offer downgraded public services, widening inequality and a failing economic plan,” Mr Worsey said.
The Conservative candidate Michael Fabricant said he would like to have seen more variety in the topics covered.
He explained: “I thought the hustings event was interesting and useful, though the questions were a little repetitive if I am honest.”
The candidates standing in the Lichfield constituency in May are:
