Whatever the result of the Labour leadership election the party must unite, insists Lichfield branch chairman Colin Ball.
Mr Ball revealed he is backing veteran left-wing Labour leadership frontrunner Jeremy Corbyn in the contest.
The 66-year-old is the favourite to be announced as the next leader on September 12 ahead of Yvette Cooper, Liz Kendall and Andy Burnham.
Mr Ball said the party party must focus on fighting for a fairer more equal society and not descend into chaos after the result.
“Whatever the result of the Labour leadership contest, we need to get behind them and support them in making Britain more equal,” he added. “We must not start sniping off behind each other’s backs.
“I am supporting Jeremy in the leadership contest, because I believe he is refreshing and honest.”
Mr Ball believes ‘Corbynmania’ may be behind an influx of people who have joined the party in Lichfield and Burntwood since the general election.
He said: “We have had dozens of new members who are unhappy with where the country is going join us since the election – I can’t give an exact figure as the numbers are changing every day.”
He added that many of the new intake are unhappy with the direction the Conservative government are taking the country in.
“The messages being put across by our councillors that we want a fairer more equal society and a living wage – not George Osborne’s con – is how we can win Lichfield and Burntwood in 2020.”
