The leader of Lichfield District Council says he is committed to helping identify new employment opportunities for those affected by the planned closure of Rugeley Power Station.
The site’s operators revealed that the coal-fired station was likely to shut in the summer.
Around 150 jobs are likely to go when the power station closes.
A task force has now been set up to identify ways to support those impacted by the news.
Councillor Mike Wilcox, Leader of Lichfield District Council, said: “This news of the closure of Rugeley Power Station is a major blow for the workforce and local communities.
“We will be joining partner agencies on the task force that will be looking at both employment opportunities and possible future uses for the site, part of which is within Lichfield District.”
The leader of Staffordshire County Council, Cllr Philip Atkins, said he was confident those who were set to lose their jobs would be able to find new opportunities.
“We have an excellent track record of attracting fresh investment and creating new jobs,” he said. “Our priority now will be to work with partners to help support each and every one of these employees secure future employment.”
