Lichfield City FC picked up three points with a 4-3 win over Racing Club Warwick on the opening day of the new season – despite playing most of the game with a makeshift goalkeeper.
Jamie Hawkins’ men got off to the worst possible start to the season when keeper Adam Jenkins fractured a finger with just two minutes on the clock, forcing City to put an outfield player between the sticks.
City also went behind after conceding an early penalty, which was converted by Ben Mackey.
The Warwick man then doubled his advantage with a second on a quarter of an hour – leaving Lichfield facing the prospect of a long afternoon.
But Hawkins’ men held firm until the break and appeared for the second half revitalised as goals from debutants Brad Lindsey and James Taylor, Max Black and Jordan Evans secured a victory that had seemed unlikely.
