LICHFIELD City Women have been crowned league champions after a 1-0 victory at Walsall.
The clash at the Bescot Stadium was a title shootout, with the Saddlers needing to beat City to have any chance of catching them at the top of the West Midlands Regional League Division One North.
City went into the game knowing they needed just a point in their final fixture against their title rivals to claim the crown.
A nervous evening under the floodlights saw the pressure lifted when Shelbie Cartwright kept her cool from the penalty spot with 20 minutes to go.
The Lichfield goalscorer’s evening was ended prematurely when she also collected a second booking late into stoppage time, but it wasn’t enough to prevent her side securing top spot and claiming the title.
