A COUNCILLOR has called for “bolder initiatives” to help address climate change concerns.
A meeting of Lichfield District Council will debate a motion on plans to create solar car parks which feature panels above bays.
The proposal has been put forward by Cllr Hugh Ashton, Liberal Democrat representative for Stowe ward.
He said the suggestion should be given consideration as part of efforts to help address the local authority’s carbon footprint.
Cllr Ashton said:
“In December 2019, Lichfield District Council declared a climate emergency.
“Some progress has been made in the last five years in measuring the council’s carbon footprint and reducing its negative impact on the environment, but some bolder initiatives are needed.
The installation of solar panels to council buildings and structures where they have not already been installed should be investigated and the creation of solar car parks should be evaluated.”
Cllr Ashton said the move would “relieve pressure” on other land which could be earmarked for solar farms.
His motion says:
“Council calls on the cabinet to consider a survey of all council-owned and managed properties, specifically buildings and car parks, as well as other structures, to determine where the installation of photovoltaic cells would be possible.
“Based on the results, approximate cost estimates for the fitting of solar panel systems, including battery storage and inverters where appropriate is to be provided. In addition, estimates should be provided of the total amount of electricity that would be generated on average over one year if all sites were developed and the current retail cost of such electricity.”
The motion will be debated at a council meeting this evening (8th July).
