One of Noel Coward’s most celebrated plays is coming to the Lichfield Garrick for a four night run.
Private Lives follows the story of Amanda and Elyot who can’t live together and can’t live apart. When they discover they are honeymooning in the same hotel with their new spouses, they not only fall in love all over again, they also learn to hate each other all over again.
Alex Farrell, who is directing the show, said: “It is such a pleasure to be able to work on such an iconic production.
“Noel Coward is arguably one of the most influential dramatists of the last century, a real pioneer in theatre, and this play is so well written that it’s a treat for both performers and audiences alike.”
Private Lives was a runaway hit when it debuted in 1930, and the play has remained popular in revivals ever since. In the initial production, Coward himself starred as Elyot opposite Gertrude Lawrence’s Amanda.
This production features a cast of emerging talent from the Midlands. The title characters are played by Neil Jackson, a rising star who has recently finished a production of The Stories That Shakespeare Knew at the MAC in Birmingham, and Georgina Edge, an actress who in the past few months has played two contrasting roles in the Midlands – Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing and the Ringslave in Aladdin at the Tamworth Assembly Rooms.
The supporting cast is made up of Davut-Sebastian Atterbury, playing Amanda’s unfortunate second husband Victor, and Tamar Williams, taking on the role of Elyot’s dainty and annoying second wife Sybil.
Private Lives will run at the Lichfield Garrick from April 25 to 28.
