A Lichfield sailor is ready to tackle a challenge he said he “never again” do.
The JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race takes place on June 21 and sees 16,000 competitors take to the water for a 50 nautical mile course around the Isle of Wight.
Nick Reed, and his crew including his 19-year-old son, Alex will take part in the 83rd running of the race.
He had a baptism of fire on his debut at the event in 2010 when he competed in a 20ft Laser SB3 which completed the event in eight hours, despite being one of the most exposed boats on the water.
This time out Nick will be putting his 42ft yacht, Impulsive, through her paces.
He said: “There are no facilities, shall we say, on an SB3. Eight hours is a long time not to go!
“It was very off-putting and, although it was an experience, I swore afterwards ‘never again’.
“The race itself is incredible. It’s a huge spectacle to be a part of. When you look back up the Solent behind you and see 500 boats it’s one heck of a sight.
“The banter with the other boats when they come past makes it really special too. When the idea of entering Impulsive was mooted we thought why not.
“It will certainly be a different experience to the first time.”
