A LICHFIELD secondary school has confirmed it will shorten the day for students during the current spell of hot weather.
King Edward VI School will close an hour early tomorrow (25th June) and Friday.
It follows a decision by Arthur Terry Learning Partnership to close all of its schools – including Nether Stowe School – for two days.
In a letter to parents, King Edward VI School headteacher Catharine Forster said:
"Following careful consideration and discussion, we have decided to make amendments to school activities taking place on Thursday and Friday in response to the current hot weather.
"We will close the school at 2.15pm on both Thursday and Friday. This adjustment will enable students to access the majority of their lessons and have lunchtime as planned, while requiring only a one-hour change to the end of the school day for parents and carers to accommodate.
"We hope this measure balances continuity of learning with the wellbeing of students and staff."
The school has also confirmed the weather has seen the postponement of its summer festival and sports day.
The headteacher added:
"These decisions have not been taken lightly. We reviewed a range of options and additional control measures that might have allowed events to proceed. However, on balance, we believe these adjustments represent the most appropriate course of action.
"As always, the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff remain our foremost priority."
