Lichfield’s lollipop men women are being armed with cameras to catch troublesome drivers.
The scheme is being introduced by Staffordshire County Council to try an improve road safety near schools.
The cameras will be mounted in the lollipops and allow the filming drivers who fail to stop at the crossing. The footage can be downloaded and handed over to Staffordshire Police who are one of the partners in the scheme.
Councillor Carol Dean, County Council cabinet member for road safety in Staffordshire said:
“It’s astounding enough that drivers are so impatient that they drive through a school crossing patrol. Then they sometimes shout abuse and threaten our dedicated lollipop people too.
“It’s so shocking and frightening that it’s often difficult for the crossing patrol officer to remember the details needed for a prosecution.”
