Lichfield City upset the odds as they beat top of the table Blackwood.
The hosts had been unbeaten since their defeat on the first day of the season but Lichfield began brightly, creating several half-chances, mainly for Liam Holt and Ryan Wilkins, the latter making his first leauge apperance for the first team.
The visitors broke the deadlock after 30 minutes when Lewis Bourne fed Holt down the right and his cross was met at the far post by Wilkins who tapped in from a yard out.
This sprung the home side into action, with Blackwood’s Snape and Larmour causing problems, with City keeper Craig Johnson making two good saves to keep his side in front at half-time.
Manager Russell Dodds made a tactical change at half time, bringing on Adam Edmunds for Sol Griffiths – a move that seemed to work, stopping the two Blackwood wide players getting into the game.
However, the hosts nearly equalised in the 75th minute, hitting the bar direct from a corner.
Playing down the slope Blackwood started putting Lichfield under pressure forcing several corners, but Stu Hamilton and Sam Buckle were winning everything that came into the box.
City finally killed the game off in the 80th minute when a corner was played back to Dan Mason by Lewis Bourne, with Mason tricking the full back on the edge of the box, before scoring from an accute angle.
This was a good solid performance from Lichfield, against a good Blackwood side, and also shows the advantage of having a reserve side playing in a quality leauge as several players have been promoted to the first team over the last few weeks.
The next two weeks see Lichfield in cup action, at home against Hampton on Saturday (October 22), kick-off 3pm, before entertaining Blackwood the following Saturday.
