Two goals from debutant Ryan Wilkins ensured Lichfield City FC’s second string retained their unbeaten record moving up to third place in the league in the process.
It was Lichfield who started the brighter with Chris Ashley going close and Leon Morgan firing wide, but gradually the hosts found their feet and only a terrific save from keeper Scott Hamilton kept the score all square, before he repeated the trick to deny the home side a first half lead.
The visitors went in front against the run of play when fine work from Ashley found new signing Wilkins who finished confidently to put the visitors in front.
The second half started like the first with Lichfield on top and they were rewarded when Ashley chased a seemingly lost cause, before squaring to Wilkins who swivelled and shot to double his and City’s tally.
City took their foot off the pedal and only some poor finnishing from Coton kept Lichfield’s lead at 2-0 before a clinical finish eventually saw them reduce the deficit to a single goal.
The hosts poured forward in the remaining 15 minutes of the game, but somehow City’s backline marshalled by Ross Adams, returning from a long term injury lay-off, held out to secure the points and move Lichfield into third place in the league.
On Saturday (October 1),City’s second string take on the division’s only other unbeaten team, league leaders Continental Star at Brownsfield Park, kick-off 3pm.
