Lichfield City’s second string put in their best performence of the season to beat top of the league Continental Star who were yet to drop a point this term.
The hosts started the brighter, an early chance from Jason Hewitt forcing the visiting keeper to smartly turn a shot behind.
City kept pressing and never allowed the league leaders to settle, Chris Yallieriou in midfield was particularly impressive, while Chris Ashley and Ryan Wilkins chased down everything up front.
It was this work ethic that rewarded Lichfield with the opening goal, Wilkins again chasing down a seemingly lost cause that prompted panic in the Star defence. City’s striker smartly rounded the keeper before slotting home on the half-hour mark.
Any thoughts of a Continental comeback were thwarted by the outstanding Danny Reeves and Ross Adams at the back, keeper Scott Hamilton having his quietest game of the season as the home side dictated proceedings.
City should have doubled their advantage when Leon Morgan found himself through on goal but his shot rattled back off the crossbar.
The second half was saw few chances, the hosts seemingly content with their advantage as the visitors huffed and puffed in the extreme temperatures.
Lichfield comfortably played out for a deserved win that left manager Paul Holt very satisfied and closed the gap on the leaders to three points.
