Lichfield City FC’s final pre-season friendly saw the hosts start the brighter in sweltering conditions.
Keeper Craig Johnstone saved well to deny Newport’s Coleman as City gradually came into the game with Sean Williams firing over and Liam Holt heading wide when he should have done better.
Newport deservedly took the lead on 35 minutes when a cross caused confusion among City’s static back four, leaving unmarked Talbot to head home and send the city side into the break a goal behind.
Choice half-time words from boss Russell Dodds saw the visitors start the second half brighter and they were soon back on level terms when a fine through ball from Lewis Bourne found Ashley Bennett in on goal and he finished in style.
The goal finally seemed to spark City into life with Adam Edmunds and Ross Adams taking control of the midfield.
Chances were coming thick and fast, Chris Ashley on the turn forcing a smart save from the home keeper and Bennett firing over from ten yards.
Lichfield scored the winner on 85 when physio Sean Westly rose to glance a header in the bottom corner and seal the victory.
The city side go into new season next week with manager Russell Dodds expecting big things of his side. He said:
“Pre-season has gone really well for us so we are going into the season full of confidence, especially with a strong reserve side to back up the first team.”
Lichfield’s season kicks off on Saturday (August 6) as they entertain Polesworth in the Challenge Cup, kick-off 3pm.
