A LOCAL MP has called for greater investment into brain cancer research.
The issue was raised in a Westminster debate on brain tumour treatment after a petition calling for more action was signed by more than 100,000 people.
Sarah Edwards MP – whose Tamworth constituency covers areas including Whittington, Stonnall, Fazeley and Shenstone – said there was an "urgent need" to address the gap in research funding.
She said:
"All those affected by brain cancer deserve access to world-leading treatments, regardless of their background.
"We must invest in research, remove barriers to innovation, and ensure patients have every opportunity to access life-changing clinical trials."
Each year around 13,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour, while thousands lose their lives to the disease.
Sarah said:
"The UK has world-leading universities, researchers and life sciences organisations. Government has a vital role in bringing these strengths together to deliver better treatments for patients.
"By improving access to trials and supporting innovative research, we can give more people hope for the future."
