THE new vice-chair of Lichfield District Council says he hopes his appointment will inspire more young people to get involved in local politics.
Cllr Andrew Rushton, Liberal Democrat member for Whittington and Streethay, will serve alongside Conservative chair Cllr Thomas Marshall for the coming year.
The 24-year-old said he wanted to show that residents of all backgrounds could be represented in the council chamber.
He said:
“Having grown up in Lichfield for most of my life, I look forward to seeing and learning more about our district in my new role.
“I hope that my appointment will also inspire other young people to get involved and play a role in local politics.
“I want to use my role to show that we can all work together to bring about a fair deal for all residents of the district, irrespective of political leanings or age.”
Cllr Paul Ray, leader of the council’s Lib Dem group, added:
“I am delighted to see Cllr Rushton elected to this role.
“He is a hard-working councillor and works cooperatively with his fellow ward councillors and Members of Parliament of other parties to get things done for residents.
“He will now bring that spirit of collaboration to his role as vice-chair of the council.
“Andrew is also passionate about promoting the interests of young people in our district. A young person such as him being elected as vice-chair of the council shows that Lichfield District Council is for everyone.”
