PEOPLE are being urged to make sure they are protected as the NHS sees a rise in winter viruses.
Health bosses in Staffordshire say they are seeing increasing numbers of people in hospital with flu and Covid-19.
They are urging people to get vaccinated ahead of festive gatherings and potential “super-spreader” events.
Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board public health consultant Matthew Missen said:
“Christmas is a time for family and friends, but it can also be a time when viruses spread rapidly as people socialise more indoors.
“Getting vaccinated with a flu and or Covid-19 vaccination is the best was to protect yourself and vulnerable loved ones and ensure you all stay well.
“Check in with older relatives, those with long-term health conditions or any family member who is pregnant to see if they are up to date with these important vaccinations.
“Don’t let illness spoil your Christmas celebrations and get vaccinated to stay well this winter. Vaccinations are available now at GP practices and pharmacies.”
Cllr Paul Northcott, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet support member for public health and integrated care, said:
“This is always the busiest time of the year for the NHS, so it is important with the holidays coming up, that we all play our part to protect ourselves and our loved ones from infections.
“If you’re eligible, make sure you get all your vaccines, including flu, Covid and RSV. If you haven’t had your flu vaccine yet, check with your local pharmacy to see if they can do it.
“Washing your hands often and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze, also helps stop the spread of germs.”
